Seuran j\u00e4rjest\u00e4m\u00e4 Kaupunkitutkimuksen talvip\u00e4iv\u00e4 Helsingin yliopiston Pieness\u00e4 juhlasalissa 23.1.2008 kokosi satakunta kiinnostunutta kuulijaa keskustelemaan sodanj\u00e4lkeisen Euroopan p\u00e4\u00e4kaupungeista. Kiitos kaikille osallistujille! Lontoon, Moskovan ja Leningradin, Berliinin sek\u00e4 Helsingin muutoksia ovat v\u00e4ritt\u00e4neet politiikka, talous, tekniikka ja tulevaisuuden unelmat eri tavoin ja eri n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmista, mutta yhteisess\u00e4 eurooppalaisessa kehyksess\u00e4 ja osin samansuuntaisten tavoitteiden puolesta, vaikka keinot vaihtelivat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Minulle vahvimpana n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmana nousi esiin aika. Nykyinen Berliini kantaa menneisyytens\u00e4 kerrostumia, joihin Beate Binderin esitelm\u00e4 avasi ajankohtaisia n\u00e4kymi\u00e4. Jaettuun kaupunkiin aikanaan toteutettua DDR:n Tasavallan palatsia puretaan ja paikalle rakennetaan osittainen kopio sen tielt\u00e4 1950-luvun alussa h\u00e4vitetyst\u00e4 Kuninkaanlinnasta. Vanha ei kuitenkaan palaa. Kun muuri murtui, aika alkoi rakentaa kahdesta rajan erottamasta kaupungista yht\u00e4, yhteist\u00e4 uutta maailmaa; tahto oli ja on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Viime kuusi vuosikymment\u00e4 on muuttanut Euroopan toiseksi. Talvip\u00e4iv\u00e4n keskusteluissa vain sivuttiin Britannian imperiumin p\u00e4\u00e4ttymist\u00e4, Neuvostoliiton hajoamista tai Saksan yhdistymist\u00e4, vaikka ne ovat vaikuttaneet perustavasti p\u00e4\u00e4kaupunkienkin historiaan. Voivatko n\u00e4m\u00e4 historian suuret k\u00e4\u00e4nnekohdat jo olla kaikille eurooppalaisille niin itsest\u00e4\u00e4n selvi\u00e4, ett\u00e4 maininta niist\u00e4 riitt\u00e4\u00e4? Pikemminkin n\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 silt\u00e4, ett\u00e4 niiden ja kaltaistensa historiallisten suunnanmuutosten merkitykset ulottuvat liian monelle taholle avautuakseen automaattisesti, ilman tietoista n\u00e4k\u00f6kulman valintaa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kaupunkihistorian kannalta seisomme uuden ajanjakson rajalla. Omissa kokemuksissani yhtyv\u00e4t vahvat muistikuvat siit\u00e4, kuinka modernia (modernismin) kaupunkia ihannoitiin, visualisoitiin ja rakennettiin, ja kuinka sen v\u00e4hitt\u00e4iset muutokset toivat esiin mahdollisuuksia toisenlaisille, omasta ajastamme nouseville unelmille ja niiden konkretisoinnille. Historia avaa uusia horisontteja tulevaisuuteen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Winter Day 2008 of Urban Studies, organized by our Society at the University of Helsinki on January 23, attracted an audience of around a hundred persons to discuss the postwar history of European capitals. Thank you for your contributions and participation! The changes in London, Moscow, Leningrad, Berlin and Helsinki have been influenced by politics, economics, technology and future dreams in different ways and from different perspectives, but within a shared European frame and, in part, for similar goals even when the means varied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For me, the strongest perspective present was time. Berlin today carries layers of its past, discussed by Beate Binder in a very current context. The Palace of the Republic of the DDR, originally constructed into the divided city, is being dismantled, to be replaced by a partial copy of the Royal Palace that was demolished in the early 1950s. The past, however, cannot be returned. When the Wall broke down, time began to build the two cities separated by a boundary into one, a new world together; there was and is the will. \u0094Where there\u0092s a will, there\u0092s a way.\u0094<\/p>\n\n\n\n The last six decades have transformed Europe. Our Winter Day discussions only touched the end of the British Empire, the collapse of the Soviet Union or the unification of Germany, although they fundamentally influenced also the history of the capital cities. Can these major changes in direction already be so self-evident to Europeans that they need not be more than mentioned? Rather, it seems to me that the significance of these and similar historical revisions of course extend to too many spheres to unfold automatically, without the point of view chosen intentionally and consciously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From the view of urban history, we stand at the border of a new era. In my personal experience, two memories are strongly united. One is related to how the modern (modernistic) city was idealized, visualized and constructed, the other to how its gradual transformation exposed prospects for other kinds of dreams and their realizations, born from our own time.
